Insect:
Dragonfly Nymph

Name:
Odonata Anisoptera

Description:

Nymphs:  Nymphs are varied in size, though most have elongated and robust bodies.  Algae often grow on their backs.  The nymphs have six legs and two large eyes at the sides of the head.

Wings:  A small pair of wings begins to develop on the back during the nymph stage.

Color:  Color varies from black to brown, but often the nymphs can be green.

Reproduction:  Eggs are deposited on the surface of the water and eventually drift to the bottom.

Adults:  Adult dragonflies are similar to adult damselflies.  The difference is that the two pairs of wings are laid flat or horizontal at rest.  Some species can attain lengths of over four inches.

Food:  Nymphs feed on other aquatic macroinvertebrates, small fish, and tadpoles.

Discussion:

Dragonfly Nymphs live on plants, among stones, leaf litter, or at the bottom of ponds or slow-flowing rivers.

They are sensitive to habitat disturbance and they need aquatic or riparian vegetation in the waterways where they live.
