Description:

 

Adults - Adult whirligig beetles are shiny black, oval-shaped beetles with the abdomen projecting beyond the elytra (wing covers).

 

Larvae - Whirligig larvae have three pair segmented legs, and long unsegmented filaments on abdominal segments. End of abdomen bears two pairs of sickle-shaped hooks.

 

Color: Black or nearly black.

 

Reproduction: There are two reproducing generations a year, one in spring and one in summer. Eggs are laid under the surface of the water. They pupate out of the water.

 

Food: Adult whirligig beetles eat aquatic insects and sometimes small insects, which fall into the water. Whirligig larva eat aquatic insects and mites.
